One of the priority activities of the university is the advanced training of specialists including training in postgraduate study, writing of doctoral dissertations in doctoral studies.

The postgraduate study at the university was open in 1990. The training provides profound studying of special disciplines, history and philosophy of science, foreign language, and ends with the candidate examinations; writing and defense of the dissertation works performed under the leadership of research supervisors, most of which are doctors of science and professors.

The training in postgraduate study of the university is performed in 13 courses and 23 scientific specialties.

In 1999 at the university the doctoral studies performing training of doctors of science on scientific specialty 05.13.01 – Systems Analysis, Management and Information Processing were open. Dissertation researches by postgraduate students and doctoral candidates are executed within the scientific directions of the university.

At Bratsk State University there is the dissertation council D 212.018.02 - on protection of doctoral and master's theses on scientific specialties works: 05.02.02 – Engineering Science, Systems of Drives and a Part of Machines, 05.02.13 – Machines, Units and Processes.

From 1980 to 2015 46 research workers of the higher education institution defended doctoral dissertations, 288 – candidate ones. The persons defended dissertation for academic degrees of the doctor of science and candidate of science are the leading scientists, teachers of higher educational institutions, heads of scientific schools, hold positions of heads of structural divisions of the university, the organizations, enterprises, administrative authorities of management of Bratsk and the area.

The training in postgraduate study is conducted in full-time and correspondence forms at the expense of means of the federal budget or on a fee-paying basis under the agreements providing payment of cost of training by legal and (or) natural persons. Training duration in postgraduate study is 3 and 4 years (full-time), and 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 years (correspondence) depending on the training course), in doctoral studies is 3 years.

The persons being trained in postgraduate study on a full-time basis are granted a draft deferment on military service for study and defense of qualification (dissertation) works.

The state grant is paid to the graduate students who are trained at the expense of means of the federal budget.
